The global crash of the most common social media like Instagram, Facebook and also the application Whatsapp showed, how dependent we are nowadays to the technology. For Facebook, as a brand known worldwide, there will for sure be consequences after such breakdown because of the negatively affect of its reputation. Since millions of people are dependent on these platforms, it’s important to transmit a feeling of trust and stability to their users, which Facebook couldn’t provide on the day of 4 October 2021 for overall 6 hours. With that, they gave their customers a motivation to look out for alternatives.
In my opinion, it could also be seen as a “wake-up-call” for everyone to recognize, how excessive we use social media. In the Netflix-documentation “The Social Dilemma” they already pointed out many negative aspects like Data-Mining, as how these product design aims to increase the potential for addiction, the impact of social media on mental health, also with a particular focus on rising teen suicide rates, and the role of social media in spreading conspiracy theories.
Even if it’s impossible to circumvent the use of these kind of applications and social media, we should be aware that technology will always have its faults and a problem like this may occur again. Especially when your business relies on it, it’s important to find a emergency plan to still be able to communicate in a situation like this. And for the private use, we should just learn that it’s not the worlds end to not be able to access to social media for only 6 hours and enjoy the life off the screens.
